I saw the touching story about Paul Potts on YouTube and got to think of Enrico Caruso.
And since I did not find any Danish website about Caruso, I decided to make one and later translated it into English.
My deceased father was a great fan of Caruso and I became one when I had "grown up" (born 1950).
I myself grew up in a working-class family. None of my parents were able to get a higher education - even if the abilities and the desire were present.
Not that I think a formal or higher education always is an advantage. It really depends on the person. Any education also includes a certain degree of indoctrination that may hamper creativity and new thinking.Caruso's primary education did not amount to much more than a couple of years and the duration of his singing lessons was much less than that of most singers. He created his own ways.

Guglielmo Vergine about Caruso's voice in 1892:
"You can't sing. You haven't any voice at all. It sounds like the wind in the shutters." "It's like gold at the bottom of the Tiber ... not worth digging for."
